It's one of the first big questions parents ask: is my child ready for preschool? Maybe your little one just turned 2, or maybe you have a 3-year-old who seems ready for more than a day at home can offer. Either way, you're not alone in wondering. The good news is that readiness looks different for every child, and there is no single "right" moment. Here's what to look for, and how our teachers at Ready Set Grow in El Cajon help children who are still getting there.
Not at all. Two is a very normal age to start. At Ready Set Grow, children can begin preschool at 2 and move up with their friends through our 2s, 3s, and 4s/TK classrooms. Starting at 2 gives your child time to settle in, build friendships, and grow at their own pace, so by the time kindergarten comes, school already feels familiar.
Your child doesn't need to check every box. Think of these as signs, not requirements.
They can follow simple directions.
Things like "please bring me your shoes" or "time to wash hands." If your child is still learning this, that's okay. Our teachers use songs, gentle routines, and lots of modeling so children learn what comes next simply by doing it each day.
They enjoy playing near other kids.
At 2, children often play side by side instead of together, and that's exactly where friendship starts. In our classrooms, teachers guide children through sharing, taking turns, and using their words, one small moment at a time.
They can handle short goodbyes.
Some tears at drop-off are normal, and they're actually a sign of a secure bond with you. If goodbyes are hard right now, our teachers greet each child warmly and use consistent routines to help them settle. We also send daily updates, so you'll know how your child's day is going. (For more tips, see our post on managing separation anxiety.)
They're curious about the world.
Lots of "why?" questions, pulling every book off the shelf, wanting to help in the kitchen. Curiosity is a great sign. Our preschool days are full of stories, music, art, and hands-on play that give that curiosity somewhere to go.
This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer is simple: your child is welcome. We take children who are still potty training. Our teachers help children learn this skill as part of their day, with patience and encouragement. We also coach parents with practical strategies to use at home, so your child gets the same message at school and at home. Potty training is a team effort, and you don't have to figure it out alone.
In our 2s room, children settle into a gentle daily routine full of songs, stories, and hands-on play. Predictable routines help young children feel safe, and feeling safe is what makes learning possible. As children move up to the 3s and 4s/TK rooms, we build on that with early reading, math, and friendship skills. Every step balances structured learning with play.
You'll stay connected the whole way. Parents receive daily updates on their child's activities, meals, and milestones, so you're always in the loop, even when you're at work.
Breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack are all included in tuition at no extra cost. That's one less thing to pack in the morning.
We also accept CDA, YMCA, and MCCYN subsidies. If you use one of these programs, give us a call and we'll be glad to walk you through it.
If you're asking the question, it may be time to come take a look. The best way to know is to see a classroom in person, meet our teachers, and picture your child there.
